I think the Avatar timeline is waaay different from ours becouse their world developed in a different way because of the bending. I don't think a comparison can be made.

Personally I think that it is in the future. The way they live their lives is how I think we should live ours. In the show, there are different philosophies and beliefs that I think are very virtuous (come from the religions of today). But we don’t seem to apply these virtues as much as we should. Thus it is in the future because they have found a way to stay true to their virtues; unlike us. Also look at how the continents are they have never been in that formation in the past. The last reason that makes me think this is that, I believe that in the future, the Asian philosophies and religions win out over the others. More and more people start to see the sanity in them and begin to believe more in them. See my theory on "The Four Nations" on the theories page. It explains some more.
