I'm always wondering about what the time era for the series is....I like to pick up clues, like:
- Aang was using non-electric clippers to shave his head
- There are no guns
- They still talk English
The English language isn't that old, is it? My guess would be just a little before guns started becoming popular....but I am unaware if the English Language was still around then....any other ideas/statements?

If you corrolate their time to our concept of time. I would say about a century or two ago. But you also have to look at there ability to bend that create no need for guns and the like. But also you have to look at the machinery they use. It is more advanced then guns first were. Look at the train like things in the Chase. And the drill at Ba Sing Sa. It could be closer to present day if you look at it that way.

i think it's impossible to associate this with a time period. and the post that aid stuff about the drill all the fire nation technology is steam powered wich was about 150 yrs ago (just a guess, i'm not rlly familiar with steam power)

puting aside this is another unverse if you had to assign a time frame to this it would have to be after mankind sends itself back to the stone age by some stupid reason (WW3 anyone)

Well, The fire nation being the model i say it would be equvilant to right after our industrial revolution. Or right in the middle. I mean they've already discovered natural gas, and it's only a matter of time for eletricity because fire benders already have somewhat of an understanding of it. In fact, seeing as they can control it to a point, they may eventually advance to place way father technolically advaned than we ever were. It interesting to think of what the Avatar universe will be like in the next 200 years.
At least they won't screw up the enviroment, because if they tried the Spirits would kick there butts.

Or different cultures are on different time lines. I mean the new world was still only bows and arrows when the British showed up with their guns.

yes but NO ONE in there world has guns but i think it would be some time in B.C. cause they had the candle thing back then. but it also has war balloons and subs so i think it could be a mix of now and some time in B.C.
