All you guys have got all the pieces to the puzzel but you just aren't putting them together. Like "Zutarian" was saying it is all in the mind. the arts of bending is all about the disipline of the mind and controling the energy of the body. Sand is just a form of earth just as ice is of water. waterbenders can still bend ice; thus earthbenders can bend sand. it is not that sandbenders are a different breed as "rcandee" said but a different dicipline the mind can learn.
