sand benders are earthbenders. they are a different breed. it may be possible for an earthbender to learn with pratice but i don't know how well they can do it.

sand is nothing more than a culmination of smaller, finer rocks. Therefore sand-bending is the very same as earth-bending.

I think it would be difficult for an earth bender to do it, just like it was diffucult for Toph to see in the desert, because they didn't grow up in that inviroment. The first thing the reaged for to bend as earth benders wasn't sand. I think the deal with metal is somewhat more similar.

if they can bend metal, then why not earth? isnt sand still earth only not as rigid?

But if you think about it metal is just melted earth. It's not so much an idea that they can't, is that they think they can't. I mean metal must occur naturally, then its "refined" which basically means it was mealted down and reshaped (chemical treatment is beyond the avatar world). There is no reason any earth bender shouldn't be able to bend it, but because they think they can't they can't. I mean it took a blind girl to overcome this mental block. So it's not so much that earth benders can't sand bend it's that they probably beleive they can't.

I don't beleave you. They don't need to bend the air to bend the earth in a whirl pool, they just need to consentrate on all the little peices of sand while keeping them seperate. Toph didn't sand bend. She turned the sand into earth and then bended it. I don't know if she can sand bend, i mean she had trouble seeing in the sand, maybe she doesn't sense it the same way sandbenders sense it as they bend.
