Here is the thing there is no telling he was left in charge of a monk. It might be that in the air nation that only air benders live in temples. If he had any family they where likely wiped out when the Air nation was mascared.

Well, we get a glimpse of his mother when she gives birth to him, but was made obvious that monk Geotso (sp?) was his gardingen. Weither that was because he was an orphan or because that's just how the air-nomads did things i don't know. But there were other children at the airtemple, and only adult men were shown. In addition, when Zuko first met Aang, with only the knowlege that he was an airbender he said "you wouldn't know about fathers, being raised by monks." So it is more than likely that all air nomads, or at least the ones who could airbend, were raised communily away from their parents.

I think it was more of the boys were raised together after a certain age and the same went for the girls. I believe that, after a certain age or after the training had been completed the air nomads could go where ever they wanted to, thus makeing them nomads, and only the old maters stayed at the temples, so after a certain point Aang probably could have returned to his mother but didn't, so either his mother was dead or he never knew her, which i don't think should necisarilly be frowned apon. Just because it's not our tradition doesn't make it wrong or bad.

..... again, i think you're wrong. I beleave the current theory is that there are Four temples, two for women two for men. The Southern was male, northern female, as was the western supposed to be female. They keep seperate so they don't destract each other while training.
