After being shot by Azula three weeks ago, Aang awakens aboad a fire nation ship. After stumbling his way up on deck in a mad haste to get away, he discovers his friends aboard, before passing out. Zuko, aboard another ship, is sharing his doubts about returning to the fire nation with his girlfriend, Mai.
The rest of the gaang along with Hakoda get Aang caught up with everything happening (including his new head of hair). They tell him how they captured the fire nation ship and what their plans are. Sokka then tells Aang that the world thinks he is dead, making Aang angry/panicked.
The episode deals with his emotional reaction to this bit of news and how he feels like he has failed the world. He ends up running away in the middle of the night, recklessly. Katara has a breakdown afterwards and a much-needed bonding moment happens between Hakoda and Katara.
Meanwhile, Zuko is reunited with his father and discovers that Azula had told their father that he was the one who killed the Avatar, not her. Zuko has doubts that the Avatar did indeed die, and Azula suspects the same thing.
Aang, after crashing and losing his glider, just about gives up hope with himself. But he is visited by Roku and Yue, who encourage and help him get safely to the crescent island (seen in the Winter Solstice- Avatar Roku episode). The Gaang reunites with Aang here, Aang burns his glider that washes up on shore, and they embark on their journey into the fire nation.
