Toph Bei Fong, an excellent and blind earthbender, has entered an earthbending contest, but lost to Aang, for he 'cheated' by using airbending instead, which propped the people that gave the prize to want it back.
Aang and the gang find Toph and her family, and they eventually call a truce, then departing the house, but to the Avatar to be seen as a criminal to her [Toph's] parents. So now, there was a new member added to the group.
