The gang flies together to the crescent shaped island like Aang was told by Avatar Roku, and discovers a sanction there that one of the five guardians helped them find.
The problem is, though, it needs five simultaneous fireblasts, and since Sokka's plan didn't work, they were stuck with nothing.
But Katara had a plan, and it worked.
So, the five guardians were tricked and Aang was able to speak with Roku, receiving important information about the commet and that he could stop it [Aang].
He also said that he would help them escape, and they manage to safely escape from the temple on the crescent shaped island.
