Zuko is a confused, banished Prince of the Fire Nation with many mixed feelings up until recently.
Book 1: Water
Before book one, Zuko was assigned an impossible assignment in order to be unbanished for speaking out of term: capturing the Avatar. But, Admiral Zhao was in his way as well, so he had to make plans carefully, and went under the guise of the Blue Spirit in order to capture the Avatar before Zhao did. The two were in constant competition in book one, up until Zhao decided to die (instead of taking Zuko's help) and fall into the Ocean forever.
In and/or around that same chapter, Pirates are hired by Zhao in order to blow Zuko's ship up and kill him, but that plan failed.
Book 2: Earth
Zuko first is seen with his uncle, and imposed by Azula interrupting their vacation by saying that they are wanted by Ozai for family matters. Zuko is very happy about this, but is soon turned down by one of the crew members of Azula's saying "It's time to take the prisoners home. - Oops....I'm sorry, Princess...." The two, now officially fugitives and traitors of the Fire Nation, cut off their pony-tails and start to let their hair grow out. Zuko, throughout book two, is battling with his mind and physical self and is now understanding that trying to capture the Avatar is not his destiny, not what he wants, but makes the choice of helping Azula, knowing it was the only choice he could make during that battle.
Book 3: Fire
Zuko finds himself, in this chapter, to be absolutely wrong about himself in the past, and that he should help out the Avatar, so in Chapter 10: The Day of Black Sun, he confesses to his now-angered father that he is going to join the Avatar and help him defeat his [Zuko's] father, and that he proudly stated that Iroh was the one that helped him do that, and that he would free Iroh from his prizon, but finds out that he had already escaped. Now, it was just the matter of the Avatar forgiving him, so he decides to ask for forgiveness and is eventually given it, but is left uncomfortable when Katara states that if he betrays Aang in any way that she would personally kill him.
