Katara, a fourteen-year old waterbending female, is the sister of Sokka and the daughter of Hakoda, her and her brother's father.
She is very serious about things, often more serious than others, and a very good waterbending teacher and learner.
Book 1: Water
Katara is introduced at the beginning of the series by yelling at her brother, Sokka, about his hunting and skills, when she accidentally unleashes a twelve-year old boy from an iceberg, in which she soon finds out to be the Avatar. She decides to go and help him, along with Sokka, but discovers that helping him master all four elements won't be easy, for there were many obstacles in the way such as new enemies created by the Avatar. She soon gets better with her waterbending throughout book one, and finds a waterbending teacher that eventually allows her to learn from him.
Book 2: Earth
The scene starts off with Aang's dream, and then Katara trying to confort him and saying the obvious. Throughout book two, she was developing her battles against enemies and her losses (Appa, her mother) as well, which eventually makes her tough and willing to fight off any bad-guys if necessary. She soon becomes on even terms with Zuko, who was learning from Iroh, the Dragon of the West, which was a big deal (Chapter 20: Crossroads of Destiny). She helps Aang out when he needs it, and she is last seen, in book two, riding off with Appa away from the cavern they were in.
Book 3: Fire
Katara, in the beginning of book three, is beginning to act more like how a normal fourteen-year old girl would, developing an attitude, but still not too bad to get in the way of her journey to help the Avatar. She, in Chapter 10, is able to help him fend off Fire Nation soldiers after coming on even terms with her father, knowing why he left the two [Katara and Sokka]. She made a threat to Zuko, in Chapter 12, that told him that he was not to betray Aang, or that she would kill him.
