he did help aang a few times. Like when he messed with zhao in siege of the north. he also picked aang up on the drill, in the episode "the drill"

Well, according to an interview with the creators.. he was originally going to be more important but they didn't follow through with it.
so he is a comic relief

lol he is kinda funny; especially in the cave in the headband where toph commented on "who would want to eat these?" and then momo came along and ate them like he hadnt had anything to eat in weeks....it was funny lol

you know he can't talk or fight unless he does what The Duke did in "Jet" when they ambussied the fire camp
