As i have stated before on previous threads, i think this is an attempt by the creators to isolate Azula. I beleive this is the start of her becoming good, or less evil, by relizing that in the end it wasn't worth it.

Mai and Ty Lee stopped being friends with Azula the minute they started to be afraid of her. So they were never truely friends. Friendship is not built on fear. They were on her side because they were afraid of the consequences if they DIDN'T join up with her.
Mai finally got the courage to stand up to her (Go Mai! wewt wewt!) and Ty Lee followed her lead. I have no doubt that Ty Lee and Mai are actaully friends with each other, dispite their obvious differences.
Azula, as zutarian said, is now isolated. She is losing her allies and whether she realizes it or not she is leading herself right into defeat.

I wouldn't go so far as to say they weren't friends. I mean i think Tylee still cares about Azula, and if weren't for Zuko Mai would have sided with Azula out of loyalty. It just their friendship was drowned out by the fear, but i still think it exists, or existed.

if u saw the part in the season 3 finale trailer u see azula falling down
so ya maybe shes weak without them

But Azula still cared about Tylee enough to console her at the party and in her off hand comments to Mai about Zuko, it was like she understood Mai's feelings towards him and delibratly set it up so Mai wouldn't have to fight him. Azula can be careing, she just doesn't want to be.

Her consolation for Ty Lee could also be twisted to her benefit. Azula realized that Ty Lee had something she didn't. She wanted advice so she could perfect herself more.
Azula is still human though, so I don't doubt she meant some of the nice things.. but in the long run she is "friends" with Ty Lee and Mai because they offer her talents she doesn't have. They are useful. Why wouldn't she want to keep them happy on her side of the line?
