Note: I am a fan of neither ship. I am not one or the other. Any which way it turns out is fine by me. Here is just my thoughts.
If you look at the lines of the show. There are four main females ( if you consider Mai as serious romantic partner material). Katara, Suki, Toph, and Mai. Now there are three guys. Sokka, Aang, and Zuko. Add in previous ties. Sokka and Suki already have a past fairly solid relationship (statements and action in Serpant's Pass). Zuko and Mai as childhood playmates and rocky partners ( he left her when he changed sides). Aang and Katara as budding romantics. Throw in all the outside scenes. Katara and Zuko in the cave in Croosroads of Destiny. Aang and Toph in Bitter Work. If you remove Mai from the picture (because she always sides with Azula). That leaves three on three. I don't see Sokka letting go of the only ohter girl he has cared about besides Yue, Suki. I can not see Toph and Zuko as a couple, besides Toph would not make a good wife to the fire lord. Toph is not able to touch the part of Zuko that desires to be better, to be good. Aang and Katara on the other hand "seem" to be good together. But even after all this time are truely unable to speak their true feelings for each other. And if you listen to Katara's speech in the Awakening she states that Aang did just like her father and abandoned her. I think she sees Aang as her (and the world's )savior, if so a lasting relationship will not work, if based on hero worship. On the flip side; Toph is able to push Aang to do better, to try harder, to do more. She does not try to make things easy for him, she expects him to be strong. Aang needs to be self assured, not reassured. He is the Avatar. Katara is the only one Zuko ever really opened up tp outside of Iroh. Zuko needs to be tempered. He is powerful and when he is angry (or scared), he is not afraid to use his skills. He needs someone who can help over ride the years of misery his father punished him with. Toph can't do that, she pushes back to hard, Mai can't do that she is unwilling to break the cycle of her chldhood training. Also Katara would make a good "queen" of the Fire Nation. Lastly; the old phrase "Opposites Attract" Earth and Air: Fire and Water..

whoa that took me 5 minutes to read rcandee! good job on thoroughly stating your thoughts! my response: I think that the term "opposites attract" is not what the creators of avatar are going for. I personally believe (my bias) that they [the creators] are going for whatever solution comes up best. Zutara, I'm sorry to say, is a relationship that never happened. Sure, it got created in "Chapter 20: The Crossroads of Destiny" but they were (in the cavern) really just friends, rigth? Well you don't call some random people who hang out having a relationship, can you? Now, kataang is a bit further than that. Kataang has a lot of background to it, especially since the two seem to have romantic feelings for each other (but i believe that aang has more feelings since he is a boy and katara is a girl) and always had had then over the six months they've been together (and discovered what each other is like; note the episodes "Jet", "Crossroads of Destiny", "Western Air Temple", "The Headband", "The Awakening", "The Boy In The Iceberg", "Kyoshi's Island", and "The Desert" especally)

Warning! Really long post up ahead! Note: I am a fan of neither ship. I am not one or the other. Any which way it turns out is fine by me. Here is just my thoughts.... [rest of quote deleted by me to save space! Read her entire post if you haven't already before this please] I realize that you ship neither Kataang or Zutara, so this reply is not attacking. If anything, I just want to make sure the Kataang side is brought up. (your post was leaning towards pro-zutara) I agree with you about Sokka probably not giving up on Suki. Evidence that he still cares for her is very evident in DOBS. But seeing how this is Zutara vs. Kataang.. Tokka/Sukka really shouldn't be brought up (but I think a new topic for it should..) Hmm.. where to start? Katara, from the very beginning, has always believed in the avatar. Yes, the avatar is a hero to her and I'd be stupid to deny it when its so obvious. Hero worship though? Aang is two people.. the avatar and her friend Aang. She met Aang first... befriended and maybe started to fall for the goofy 12-year-old boy before she knew he was the avatar. You could counter this by saying that all major Kataang moments happened after she knew he was the Avatar. But you have to look at the context the moment is happening in. How many of them are in the situation where Aang is a hero? Cave of two lovers? no. The headband? no. The fortuneteller is the big one though. Her realization. She is told that she will marry a powerful bender. She doesn't automatically link it to Aang (The avatar for gods sake!). Sokka points it out. When she thinks of Aang she associates the name with the goofy kid she found in the iceberg not the hero figure he is destined to be. The story of Avatar is the story of a twelve year old boy meeting his destiny. Its a story based on Aang's growing up. He needs to be self-assured (and he was in DOBS) about his powers and his destiny. Who says that he has to be self-assured in every aspect of his life? Telling someone that you also happen to be best friends with that you love them is going to be difficult. Beyond a nornal twelve-year-old's capacity/maturity. Aang is building up to it. He knows what he feels is love (the guru ep for evidence).. its just a matter of timing. He has more important things on his plate then to try and get a girlfriend. And Toph definately helps him by not letting him be weak. She is trying to change him. That's not healthy in a relationship. Katara and Aang shift and balance each other. Toph and Aang clash.. Toph tries to change Aang. How would that be a successful or equal relationship? And you can't disregard Toph's crush on Sokka and her feelings Katara and Zuko shared a heartfelt scene in COD, where they both opened up to each other. I can't deny that. Its a matter of current standings though. Katara is shunning Zuko worse then any other member in the Gang. Zuko is trying to open up to EVERYONE in the gang, but mostly Aang now. The sharing of emotions does not have to end romantically. Cuz then.. Zukaang would dominate. Zuko lets his emotions run wild. He acts on them. Katara is the same way. So if they disagree on a subject why would Katara calm him down? She'd be blowing up as well. Arguing would be common and it could involve bending and result in injury. They are so similar about how they handle a situation.. they wouldn't balance each other out. Mai does not act on her emotions. She isn't going to yell back at Zuko when he gets angry. She keeps him in line.. waits for him to cool down. Evidence is in The Beach. Yes, she blew up at him... but it was in a moment of weakness. Its not how she will handle situations in the future (as you said, she is too trained on her cycle of childhood behavior). She keeps her cool. Mai has also been seen to be someone Zuko can open up to. As shown in Nightmares and Daydreams. He tells her the truth. That he wasn't himself in the meeting. She doesn't shun him does she? no. Aang balances Katara in a similar way.. but I won't get into that.. this is too long anyway. Hmm.. I don't see Katara as a good leader of the Fire Nation for various reasons. 1) She HATES the fire nation. Even after the war, feelings like that are hard to ignore. She is just as prefudice against the fire nation as her brother. 2) She is very one-sided. She won't open her mind to other possibilities. She thinks she is right everytime. Compromise could be difficult. 3) The fire nation would shun her. The people were hoping for domination of the world. Their leader dies. A new one.. one marked a traitor takes the throne. They already will hate Zuko. And he marries someone from the water tribe? It would turn into one nasty civil war. A common misconception is that Zuko and Katara are opposites because their elements are opposite. Truthly though, they are more similar then any other characters. As mentioned above, they handle situations the same. They have similar personalities.. (the self-righteous thing). They have so much in common its scary. Then you look at Aang and Katara. Katara is a leader and very aggressive. Aang is quite the opposite. I could rant more but I won't.. and sorry if this message sounds rude and attacking! i really didn't mean for it to turn out that way!

I NEVER kid about kataang. They love each other. 100 of those years i look at and throw in the bin. Now Aang is 12 & katara is 14. I have met many couples were the guy is 3 years under the girl. WHY ON EARTH DO YOU THINK ZUTARA WILL EVER HAPPEN? She practicly murder him for aang! How do you put a pic on here?
